Florida Trip Day 3 - Disney's Animal Kingdom

Jason and Wren with view of "Mt. Everest"

Sunday, 9 November 2008 - Monday, 10 November 2008

Disney World Animal Kingdom

After leaving Blue Spring, we head on down to Orland and arrive at Disney around 3pm. We were tent camping at Fort Wilderness so we headed to our site and set up camp. We spent the evening getting familiar with our surroundings at Fort Wilderness and then turned in for the night for our first big day at Disney World!

Monday morning we started off at Animal Kingdom. I had not been to Disney World since 1992, well before Animal Kingdom, so it was top on my list to see. I liked it, but I would prefer a trip to the San Diego Zoo and Wildlife Park. The roller coaster Expedition Everest was pretty fun though! We took Wren to the 3D It's Tough to be a Bug show and she did NOT like it! She cried when the fog and mist blew out into the audience and we had to exit the theater. The Boneyard playground, Kilimanjaro Safarie, Lion King show and character greetings were a big hit though!

Florida Trip Days 1 & 2 - Friends and Manatees

Friday, 7 November 2008 - Sunday, 9 November 2008

A Quick Visit with Friends on the Way to Orlando
with Another Side Trip to See Manatees in the Wild

Seen in Georgia
This was too funny not to take a picture of - a racing pigeon trailer!

We started out our trip on Friday afternoon driving to Georgia. On Saturday morning we woke up and drove to Jacksonville and had a delicious lunch with our my high school friend Jason and his wife Melanie, my college friend. Of course, I somehow managed not to take ONE picture. Wren thought that J&M were just the greatest. I'm sure it didn't hurt that they took her to a totally fun playground in a beautiful section of Jacksonville. It was great to see them in their daily surroundings and to see their lovely home.

After our lunch with Melanie and Jason, we journeyed down to the Gainesville area to see our friends Bobby and Kim Cappozzi. Bobby is a fellow Lockheed employee and they were in Italy the same time we were. It was great to see them as we hadn't since January. They were gracious enough to let up stay the night and Kim not only made us a delicious dinner but also capped it off with the most delicious pancakes I've had in a long time.

Kim and Wren - just like they had never been apart!

After our delicious breakfast with the Capozzis on Sunday morning, we headed down to Blue Spring State Park to see if we could spot some manatees wintering in the warm water of the spring.

We got lucky and were very close to a mama manatee and two babies!

The manatees are hard to see in the photos but they seemed just as interested in the people as the people gathering around the steps were to see the manatees! The park rangers came and asked everyone to exit the water or swim away from the area as the it is against the law to touch or harass the manatees in any way. We did see one young boy sneak a quick touch of the mama manatee though he was quickly chastised by his own mother!

We stopped in the park information center to hear a scheduled talk about manatees. One fact that I learned is that, sadly, manatees are still hunted and eaten. Mostly in South America, but apparently, even here in the United States too!

Election Night 2008

We watched the results at the home of our friends Sandy and Brian Allbee. It was a lot of fun to usher in a new president with like-minded friends. ...And we let Wren stay up late in honor of the historic occasion!

These are three pictures from the summer that I liked and just wanted to post.

Trick-or-Treat!

Since we were in China on Wren's first Halloween and Italy on Wren's second Halloween, this year was the first time she was able to trick-or-treat. She was really excited about it and we practied knocking on the door and saying "trick-or-treat!" And, of course, she loved getting candy!

All set!

Happy Family Day

Today was our 2nd family day and we commemorated it with a day of fun. Jason took the day off and we started it off by jumping at Pump It Up. Then it was out to the UAH Library where we visited some of our friends. We had a yummy lunch at Steak-n-Shake but by then Wren was starting to fade so we went back home for a nap. After nap time, we headed down (in costume) to the library Halloween carnival and finally wrapped up the day with dinner at Ding How II.
Jason also donated money to our local public radio station so all day a spot ran celebrating our big day. It's hard to believe that two years have passed by so quickly!
